Stonehurst / The Robert Treat Paine Estate
Stonehurst / The Robert Treat Paine Estate Waltham Massachusetts
In 1883, Robert Treat Paine, Jr. and his wife, Lydia Lyman Paine, commissioned the architect Henry Hobson Richardson and landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead to design a spacious addition to their summer house in Waltham, Massachusetts. The house currently serves as a museum and multi-use function hall while its grounds consist of a 109-acre public park. The historic facility serves an educational use and hosts weddings, receptions and similar functions throughout the year.
Mills Whitaker Architects designed accessibility improvements and restroom renovations while preserving the integrity of historic features. Vertical access was provided by restoring an abandoned elevator hoistway and public restrooms were renovated with accessible fixtures and period details.
