Park Street Church / Boston, Massachusetts

Park Street Church, founded in 1809, owns and occupies four contiguous buildings that include the original church, 1 Park (1971), 2 Park (1887), and 3 Park Street (1918). Mills Whitaker Architects has provided a range of professional services to this historic congregation for its 95,000 square foot urban campus.

• 1994 Space Planning Study – Measured drawings, code analysis, conceptual design and budgets for mixed-use phased renovations. This study was done after the purchase of 2 & 3 Park Street from the Houghton Mifflin Company in 1993.
• 1995 Alterations – Relocation of church administration and pastoral offices into 2 Park Street and the restoration of classroom spaces within 1 Park Street.
• 1998 Renovations – Exterior restoration and interior alterations of 3 Park Street involving office space, meeting rooms, youth ministry space, job training center for the homeless, crisis pregnancy center and two parish apartments for an associate minister and for the senior pastor and their families.
• 1999-2003 Alterations – Phased conversion of existing classrooms in 1 Park Street for shared Sunday School and Park Street Kids, a startup Preschool.
• 2007 Exterior Restoration – Extensive masonry repairs, removal of abandoned exterior fire escapes, and slate roofing replacement on the historic church.

2008 Interior Alterations – Interior alterations in the historic church for accessibility improvements and to create an open welcome center for events with operable walls for multi-use meeting space at other times.

• Current work includes renovations of the parish apartment, restoration of the church belfry, selective repairs and future planning for additional renovations.

Following the 200th anniversary of the church in 2009, multiple preservation awards were received from the Massachusetts Historical Commission, Boston Society of Architects, Massachusetts Architectural Access Board, Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts and the Boston Preservation Alliance.
