First Congregational Church

First Congregational Church
Bridgton, Maine
This 19th-century wood-framed Gothic Revival church was plagued with a deteriorating founda- tion, basement water problems and an awkward connection to its mid-20th century education wing and lobby. Mills Whitaker Architects was retained to prepare an Assessment and Master Plan. Phase I, completed in 2006, consisted of a complete reconstruction of the church’s basement and adjacent lobby area. The work involved replacement of the basement along with reconfiguration of the lobby, kitchen, meeting hall, clothing pantry, support spaces and accessibility improvements. The renovation has improved the building for its myriad church and community functions.
