St. John’s – St. James Episcopal Church / St. James Educational Center

This property is located in the John Elliot Square Historic District of Roxbury, Massachusetts and includes two historically significant structures and one contemporary addition. Ionic Hall, one of the oldest surviving brick buildings in Roxbury, is a circa 1800 Federal Style mansion. St. Luke’s Chapel of 1901 is one of the early churches of Ralph Adams Cram. Mills Whitaker Architects LLC has provided the following services:

  • 1999 Conditions Assessment & Preservation Plan – funded with matching grant from Massachusetts Historical Commission. The assessment included review of the two historic structures (1805 & 1901), the modern sanctuary addition (1968) and the site.
  • 2000 Porch Restoration funded with assistance from Historic Boston Incorporated.
  • 2001 Feasibility Study for improving both the Church and School uses of the existing facility.
  • 2002 Renovation Design for improvements to the St. James Educational Center after school program including renovation of the Sanctuary and restoration of the site. Project partially funded by the Child Care Capital Investment fund.
